The idea to this tour came to escape the freezing weather conditions here in Austria. Primarily we intended to fly to Cuba. But an Austrian Airline made impossible... We simply gave up, canceled the flight to Cuba and found a new destination in the Caribbean Islands: Puerto Rico.

The difference to Cuba, upon other travelers is, that the territory of Puerto Rico is under US government. What means more developed, and rather good infrastructure in terms of food and accommodation. Whilst some people complain about the poorness at Cuba. There is definitely a lack of public transportation. Except the capital city of San Juan, there is no train system. Long distance buses, we have not found.Everyone travels by car. Some roads in bigger cities can be very busy. Puerto Rico car drivers a patient and relaxed. No danger o bicycle riders at all.

Accommodations can be rather expensive. There are luxury hotel with more than US-$ 1.000,- a night. For us not affordable. With the help of a booking portal we found cheaper ones...

note: some booking portals can be nasty, as you cannot stop their marketing mails. I had bad experience particular with Expedia, Booking.com stopped sending marketing mails after calls The Island has a lot of potential in terms of biking. My big trip through North, Central and South America

Part I: Cycling through South America. In eight months I cycle from Quito (Ecuador) to Tierra del Fuego (Chile), crossing numerous mountain chains, deserts, tropical rain forests and the windswept plains of Patagonia.

Part II: Cycling through Central and North America. In seven months I cycle from Quito (Ecuador) to The Canadian Rockies, crossing Colombia, the Caribbean, Mexico and the deserts, mountains and canyons of the United States of America.

Un viaggio in bici sulle Ande, con passi oltre i 4900 m, strade isolate e remote tra deserti, vulcani fumanti, lagune salate e gaysers. 3200 km tra Nasca, in Perù e Salta, in Argentina, passando per Bolivia e Cile. Un viaggio nella natura e cultura di paesi e popoli dalle tradizioni millenarie.

Dalle aride lande di Nasca, nota per le strane forme preincaiche del suo deserto, siamo saliti fino a raggiungere Cusco, capitale e cuore pulsante dell'impero Inca. Il lago Titicaca ci ha condotto fino in Bolivia dove ci siamo addentrati per la pampa, dapprima ai piedi del vulcano Sajama che svetta oltre i 6500 m, poi giù fino ai salar di Coypasa e Uyuni per concludere lungo una pazzesca strada tra lagune e vulcani.

Il deserto di Atacama ci ha accolto in Cile mentre il passo Sico e la Quebrada del Toro sono state la nostra porta d'ingresso in Argentina, verso le basse quote di Salta La Linda.

Brevetto Brenta-Ortles is a wonderful challenge in North Italy with beautiful ascents, lakes, landscape and motivating climbs. The route (officially 363 km + 8088 m) starts towards the Lago di Molveno with breathtaking mountains in the background, then through the Val di Non and Merano. The ride’s two most challenging climbs are the legendary passo dello Stelvio (2760 m) and Passo di Gavia (2621 m), but it is followed by Passo del Tonale, Passo Campo Carlo Magn next to the Brenta Dolomites and at last a short, but romantic ascent to Stenico. To cycle this roundtrip the participants has max. 34 hours to be a „finisher” of this challenge. I did this in August and was amazed by the nature, mountains, and otherwise it was adventurous too, becaue few hours before cycling up to Passo dello Stelvio a heavy strom caused landslides on the descent to Bormio and few times I had climb onto and down from the rocks to reach Bormio and then finish the challenge. It was a wonderful, memorable ride and I can suggest to others !

You may see we had wonderful biking weather in Austria. With doing a part by train saved our energy. We started with the local train ''Mariazellerbahn'' at St.Poelten (Austria) heading to the town Winterbach, which is already rather elevated (round 500 meters). After a short ride, we found an inviting restaurant. As it was noon, we decided to to stay for a beer. Riding further leaded to an elevation of 1.110 meters. We have seen the first snow of this year. A colorful fall day was our award of all the little climbing's. The overall distance of our tour was just sweet 110 kilometers. Long enough to ride the last kilometers in dark. And the night has felt on the setting sun. Some pictures are exciting some not ... Anyway, you may see colorful fall pictures from our short Austrian ''Indian summer''. Ma lo Svaneti, il vero "free Svaneti", inizia da Mestia. In questi luoghi arrivò con le proprie spedizioni Vittorio Sella, nipote del politico Quintino Sella che fondò il Club Alpino Italiano. Fotografò paesaggi, abitanti e loro usi. Le sue immagini sono ora oggetto di un pregevole volume del TCI e CAI che ne traccia la figura di fotografo alpinista esploratore. Una descrizione in quel volume della regione chiamata Soanezia, sembra scritta nei giorni in cui ci trovavamo dinnanzi agli stessi luoghi: "Non vidi mai natura alpestre così bella, così serena, grandiosa, pittoresca per forma e colorito. Temperatura deliziosa, calma adorabile, l'Usbha sublime fra cumuli leggeri. La Soanezia nelle belle giornate di ottobre è un vero Paradiso".

Quando viaggiare non è solo spostarsi da un luogo all'altro per ritemprare il fisico, ma un incontro con culture e storie differenti, il viaggio può dimostrarsi l'occasione per raccontare.

L'esigenza di scrivere nasce dalla consapevolezza di aver vissuto momenti unici e dal desiderio di condividerli. Per me è successo anche in questo viaggio e, dopo aver scritto il libro che rivela tutti i particolari, propongo al lettore una sintesi dell'itinerario, sicuro che apprezzandolo andrà a gustarsi anche la lettura più completa del libro "Georgia e svaneti,gamarjoba". The German Alpine Road, from Lindau on Lake Constance to Berchtesgaden on Königsee

A great trip around northern Corsica. I started with a round trip of Cap Corse from Bastia, then crossed the island, staying in the hills close to Calvi. The tour continued down the coast to Porto, with a round trip based there. The most spectacular day was the ride from Porto to Corte in the middle of the island. The last ride was back to Bastia through a remote area. Great scenery every day, with quiet coastal and mountain roads. A 7-day tour from Toulouse to Barcelona. 620km cycled, stopping at Saint-Blancard, Lourdes, Sainte Marie de Campan, Vielha, Montferrer, Manresa and Barcelona.

A stunning dream trip through the Pyrenees. A nicely-balanced route, taking in Lourdes for a blessing of the legs, three consecutive big mountain days and Tour/Giro highlights of Col du Tourmalet, Col de l'Aspin, Col de Peyresourde, Col du Portillon, Puerto de la Bonaigua, and Port del Canto, then a nice couple of days home run to Barcelona.

Bei den Emiraten und Oman kommen einen gleich Bilder von Sindbad und 1.001 Nacht in den Sinn, aber auch schier endlose heiße Wüsten. Kurzum eine perfekte Region, um sich Fahrrad und Zelt zu packen und auf den Weg zu machen.

A couple of years I wondered how to cross the Sayan and Altai mountains with a start from lake Baikal in one ride from east to west, because this area in Russia is only reachable by a couple of dead-end roads from the east, north and west. Between this roads no usual connections exists - pure wilderness dominates over hundreds of kilometers, so it seemed to be necessary to combine the destinations with big detours... But with the time I found out, that there are drivable tracks in the Altai which connect the dead-end roads. Only a crossing of Sayan seemed really impossible by bike... until I read about 'packrafts' - lightweight inflatable boats for combined land-water trips. That was the answer to my dream trip! I decided to cross the trackless section of Sayan with such a packraft and my bike on it - until the next road appeared to continue with the bike...

This short winter trip was initially planned as a test to find out if it is possible to cycle on snowmobile tracks with a common bike and a sledge (small packable pulka). The best destination for doing that was the region of Kebnekaise, the highest mountain of Sweden, located in Lapland close to Kiruna. There a lot of interesting places are not far from the airport and cold temperatures are more stable than in other parts of Scandinavia. At the end, I was not able to go the whole planned route, but fine weather, great landscapes and atmospheric lights, especially in the nights, round this trip to an intensive winter experience.

One year after our first bike trip on frozen bays along the Swedish archipelago, we started a retry more northward in the region of Höga Kusten (High Coast). But unfortunately this time we had permanently cloudy and foggy weather with temperatures around zero degree. The ice was mostly broken or not safe enough, so we cycled mainly on roads, but also in that way we had some interesting impressions from the coastline and the back country.

This bicycle tour in Andalucia was a mix of cycling along the sea on the Costa del Sol and visiting few panoramic mountains (Mirador Cabra Montes, Haza de Lino, etc.) and cycling on the mountains of Sierra Nevada and Sierra de los Filabres. Bwtween Nerja and Castell de Fero the coast is wonderful with romantic bays. On the most memorable day we cycled up to Pico Veleta (3394 m) which can be reached on the highest finishing paved road and offers wonderful panorama. Above 2500 m we had very heavy wind gale. Once it lifted my touring partner's bike as he was walking next to it (he felt too dangerous to cycle there). Standng at the peak we could see Granada and the landscape around it , the coast, the Alpujarras and thanks to the wind we could see Gibraltar and a little bit Africa too. Another interesting memory was to cycle though the semi-desert of Tabernas and meet and look deers by sunset at the ridge of the Sierra de los Filabres.

This was a trip from Bilbao in Spain to Perpignan in France over the Pyrenees. We went over the Pass of Roncesvalles and the Aubisque. We also saw a couple of caves.

This is a bike tour from Lyon to Nice through the Alps. The biggest col was the Cime de la Bonnette; but we also went up the Alpe d'Huez for fun.

Paris to Nice: my longest, and in many ways most challenging, solo tour ever. I planned my route inspired by the famous Race to the Sun, and followed various segments of that parcours. But I added detours, making my ride longer and more beautiful, higher and challenging. Detours to climb Mont Ventoux from the west in Malaucene, then turn back to the northeast into the Alps to Barcelonnette, to climb Cime de la Bonette, the highest paved road in the French Alps. The route over Col de la Cayolle, one of the most beautiful climbs I have ever ridden, led me to Nice. Of course, I planned for time to visit museums, Roman ruins, medieval churches and vineyards along the way. It is, after all, France where I was touring.

Winter time in Austria, where I live is hard. In order to avoid losing all my little power, I have decided to spent some time on the other half of the globe. A long way to go down there. But worth to see.

Crossing the equator by your plane can be shaky. When I met a pilot on the occasion we shared the same train at Heathrow's terminal 5 train, he said: "this are just bumps as on a lousy road".

Today, Namibia is a rather save country in terms of criminal acts. I would say drug free. You have to expect there will be no public transport. Long distance travel mostly made by shuttle services. I used the Welwitchia shuttle service, which I can recommend. Alternatively you may take the desert train, which operates from May through October.

Bicyclist are very rare. On many roads outside the city limits, one may not find a shoulder, what makes bicycling very dangerous. Namibian car drivers are very similar to the Spain car drivers: once they are in motion, it is very hard to stop them.

One thing to know: The high season starts on May. You have to have booked an accommodation in advance. If not you may sleep in your tent (not recommended - can be dangerous because of wildlife animals). You still may find Island whereas German is spoken. Even they have at least two German TV programs: ZDF & Sat1 (without the nagging sex adds at night time).

Wind, rain, mud and rubble, Iceland is known to bring man and material to its limits.

There was only one problem ... my girl friend! There are two things that should not meet under any circumstances: Her and Iceland (and certainly not with a bicycle). In order to save our relationship, I finally was holding a bye in my hand and was allowed to leave.

A beautiful autumn bike ride through the Alsace and the Black Forest. In Alsace, I cycled on the Route des Crétes and back via the Black Forest High Street. The weather was fine and I had only a few hours of rain.

We did it again...: as nearly every year, we did the fall bicycle tour Passau (Germany) to Vienna (Austria). This time our Group has been complete. Raimund, vulgo the Chefe has joined us. He came with the train to Passau. We have carried one of our bicycles to Passau. After many complaints, he accepted this bicycle.

Our faith have been not so good this day, as Heide was in charge to carry Raimund's bicycle to Passau. Unfortunately she left it at Wels were we changed the train. The bicycle has been leaning for hours unwatched at the platform. At Passau: a big surprise: of course - no bicycle for Raimund. Telephone companies made a good business. Our first attempt to contact the German trains station officer was "we have no contact to the Austrian railroad company - everything is automated"... . Finally Heide found a guy at the ticketing counter who has private contact with a guy at Wels, were the bicycle actually was. Success! his guy checked, and the bicycle was still there. Unbelievable in this times we life. Heide went back with one of the next trains to Wels, picked up the bike and followed us to our accommodation.

Our tour continued smoothly the next days in extreme good weather condition. We have modified our tour a little in order to check for "new" accommodations. Enjoy the taken pictures and the report. Good luck to our followers.

Our trip to Jordan took place in december 2009. We flew to Amman Airport, cycled to Madaba than to Dead Sea. Followed the road along the Dead Sea then to the highlands to Al Karak and continued to Dana National Park and the famous Petra. From there we travelled first to the desert, Wadi Rum, and after that to the Red Sea.
