A little bit of basic - noncycling - information about Denmark

Geography

Denmark - the small 5 million people democratic monarchy - consists of one peninsula Jutland (Jylland), and 400 islands. Of these 100 island are inhabited with Zealand (Sjaelland) and Funen (Fyn) being the largest. The Capital of Copenhagen has 1 million inhabitants and is situated on Zealand.

Due to the winding fjords of Jutland and the many islands, Denmark has a costal line of 7.000 km. You will never be more than 60 km from the ocean - and a the nearest beach.

Denmark is part of the European Community which means most Europeans may travel freely. But to remember to bring your passport. This Does not go for people of the Nordic Countries which may enter without passport. People from outside of Europe may need a visa.

Language

The language is of course Danish. Most Danes do, however understand and speak English to some degree. You may be lucky that people understand German, especially in the Southern/western part of Jutland - but to not count on many people speaking that language. Very few people speak or understand French or Spanish.

Do not worry. Use fingerlanguages. Danes are used to being approached by foreigners, and will probably appologize for not speaking *your* language.

Food

You should of course try a few of the Danish specialties. The "Smorgasboard" with open Danish sandwiches is probably the most well known.

This ritual always starts out with a sclice of ryebread with butter, hering (1-2 of several kinds) with topping. You eat this with knife and fork and most important of all order an icecold snaps to go along with it.

After this initial starter you may try all sliced meats or fish on top of your ryebread. It must of course be neatly arranged with lettuce, cucumber (in vinegar) slices or other toppings. Many inns carry some straight forward - and very typical Danish Menus. Look for the DanMenu-sign. Currency & Credit Cards In Denmark we use "Kroner" and "Oere". 1 US Dollars equals app. 6.00 DKR. 1 German Mark equals 3.90 DKR. 1 French Franc equals 1.15 DKR. In many restaurants Visa, Eurocard and Mastercard credit cards are accepted.

Opening hours

The general opening hours are open 9.00 - 17.30.

Many kiosks or gas stations are open untill 21.00 or 22.00. Here you will find a large selection of candy and usaully a few basic household items like bread, sauusage, cheese, etc.

In the center or on the outskirts of major towns you may find a large departement store (OBS, Bilka or Magasin) and they will usually have longer opening hours, untill 19.00 or 20.00.

Tourist Season

The first three weeks of July are the peak season. Cottage house will be more expensive and harder to get. If you plan to travel in this period plan on booking ahead for youth hostels and possibly also for some camping sites.

The weather is usually best in June, July and the first half of August. April and September have more rain and are a bit chilly.
